Senior Class Gift Committee Asks for $20.19 from Seniors, $2.019 from SoC Seniors

It’s well known that there are few thrills in the world that compare to making fun payments.  From getting 18 one dollar bills from your grandma on your—wait for—18th (!) birthday, to those hilarious Venmo captions (‘cocaine’! ha!), there’s nothing more enjoyable than mixing humor and finances. That’s why most seniors will tell you that their heart skipped a beat when they received that salacious email from one of their peers announcing that, as per tradition, the Senior Class Gift (SGC) committee asks 2019 seniors for a donation of a cool and fun $20.19 towards the class gift.

However, it has come to the committee’s attention that this may be assuming too much about certain portions of the student body. In the spirit of inclusivity, the SGC will now ask Seniors for $20.19, and School of Communication seniors for $2.019.

Wow! What a fun way to let those noisy little artists in on the fun while recognizing some obvious realities.

In a statement, Senior Class Gift Chairperson Olivia Herman said, “While we encourage all of our senior class to donate the classic $20.19 towards the worthy cause of the institution that they just paid $250,000 to attend, we are aware that, for example, Sarah Earnest’s (SoC ’19) short film “Through the Subconscious Eyes of a Metaphorical Groundhog” isn’t getting the traction she thought it would, and Theatre student Daniel Heiken (SoC ’19) is at least 6 years away from deciding that law school is the right move. So we’re adjusting accordingly.”

The decision was mostly lauded by the School of Comm students.  Catherine Morson (SoC ‘19) said that she appreciated the empathy being extended while she “wait(s) for the rest of the world to develop the artistic sensibilities that it takes to appreciate [her] one-woman performance of the story of Angela Merkel’s sexual awakening”.

Not all were so pleased. Jordan Shaw (SoC ‘19) expressed his confusion about how to make a payment of $2.019. “Venmo only lets you type two numbers after the period and I haven’t done rounding since 2013. So, frankly, I’ll probably just skip it and rent A Star is Born again instead.”

At press time, the SCG had just announced that it will be requesting $201.90 from McCormick seniors, and a crisp handshake from Bienen grads.
