This Weinberg Student Thinks Gender Could Be a Social Construct

EVANSTON, Illinois— Weinberg student Karen Owens created shockwaves through campus when she suggested that gender was only a social construct during her Introduction to Sexuality Studies discussion section. The fourteen-person section was discussing the societal pressures of being a woman in 2015. One student proposed “some of the obligations of women don’t really make sense.” Another questioned whether or not it made sense to assume what colors babies liked based solely on their sex. Then, Owens raised her hand:

“I mean, I feel like on some level gender is just a social construct, you know?” said Owens. There was a gasp. Her classmates then stormed out of the classroom to spread the groundbreaking and original idea that has most certainly not already been beaten into the ground.

Northwestern University President Morton Schapiro announced via email, “Today is one of those days that reminds me why I love my job. Thank you, Karen Owens, for making all of us proud to be Wildcats!”

Owens reportedly does not even have any particular interest in Gender Studies. According to close friend Maya Hamlin, she only took the class to fill a distribution requirement.

“I didn’t realize that Karen was such an intellectual,” said Hamlin. “I guess I hope she remembers me when she gets elected president!”
