Opinion: Even Though It Would Be Hilarious, Do Not Write-In Seymour Butz

Opinion: Even Though It Would Be Hilarious, Do Not Write-In Seymour Butz

Today is an important day for our nation.  Every Election Day is, yet this one has a bit more gravity because the decision between Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton may be what decides if our democracy remains intact. In the past, Sherman Ave has refused to endorse national candidates, and this election is no exception. Instead, we would like to encourage people to vote and, more specifically, not to write-in Seymour Butz for the office of President.

We know what you’re thinking. “Illinois is a blue state and will obviously go to Hillary," "My vote won’t even count,” "There's no good candidate," "Hahahah. Butz." WRONG. WRONG WRONG. RIGHT BUT MISGUIDED. To throw away your vote to write in something as hilarious as Seymour Butz may same like the greatest prank of all time when in reality it may be what decides if Illinois goes Red for the first time since 1988. There is too much at stake to write-in such a knee-slapping ha ha.

The write-in campaign for Seymour Butz seemed like a joke when it began. A gut-busting lampoon of our stuffy election process. No one expected it to gain real momentum.  Nate Silver dismissed the campaign and didn’t think Butz would get past Super Tuesday. Mr. Silver forgot about the nations silent majority of burnouts who know nothing about politics. They were the ones who let Seymour Butz get the enough votes to be on the ballot in all 50 states. Whether you think we should lock Hillary up or whether Trump is an arrogant buffoon not fit to run the country, we can all agree that Seymour Butz and his VP candidate I.P Freely are fictional, funny names and nothing more. Go out and vote for something real.
