“As the only straight white guy in this room full of pink balloons I understand what it’s like to be a minority”

Being a minority can be real difficult sometimes, and in this time of anger and division what we really need is understanding. Growing up as the only straight white male in a room full of pink balloons has given me some real insight into what it’s like to be a minority, what it’s like to be different from everyone else.

There are so many pink balloons in this room, and as the only white guy here, it can get real tough sometimes. But my experience allows me to understand the struggles against discrimination. Like imagine being the only Asian American kid in a school full of white people. It’s a lot like being the only straight white guy in a room full of pink balloons.

Sometimes the balloons would call me names like ‘white boy’ or ‘white guy’ or ‘Dennis’ and that would always hurt my feelings. I mean, just because I’m not a pink balloon doesn’t mean they can target me for being different.

At times it gets so overwhelming that I need to go outside, away from all those balloons. It’s nice to just see another white face for once, to not always have to be an outsider in a world of pink latex.
