Sherman Ave Guide to Evanston Summer

Sherman Ave Guide to Evanston Summer

You probably made your decision to stay in Evanston when you heard that Livability.com named it the 10th best downtown in the U.S. Or if you’re like me, the idea of getting an internship and setting yourself up for the future frightens you so you decide to work at library. No matter what your story is, Evanston is still here for you during the summer.

Maybe the idea of not being at home or seeing your English professor in the wine aisle at Whole Foods upsets you, but believe me, Evanston summer is not so bad. It’s a blast, actually. If you have never lived in a suburb before, you get to be a cultural tourist by living in a place with mansions! If you have lived in a suburb before, you get to continue living recklessly because you’re in college! Here are some things to do while you’re in E-Town for the brutally humid yet lovely summer months:

Eat at Some of Evanston’s Best Restaurants

Evanston is proud to boast that it is “The Dining Capital of the North Shore,” but it’s hard to see that when every birthday dinner you go to is at Cozy Noodle. This summer, you should head on down Chicago Ave. and try Cross-Rhoades or Lucky Platter. It’s a nice break from Pad See Ew. Let’s say you’re a little more upscale and your parents have no qualms with you spending their money, then head on over to Oceanique, where my friend and I once won a raffle for a free dinner worth $250. And the best part at Oceanique? THEY DON’T CARD!

Make Some Summer Friends

A lot of your friends are probably at home or off working in a different city, but that does not mean it’s slim pickings here in Evanston. At least 1 or 2 major chillers will be around this summer and, word on the street is, they’re looking to chill. Now it is true that you’re going to be hanging out with a lot of the same people, but that just means you’ll build a bond for life going to summer house parties that have at least 15 high schoolers there. Besides the major chillers, there’s a cavalcade of people to be friends with. I’m talking kids from your PA group, friends of friends, freaks, weirdos, townies, drug-dealers, people who you were close with freshman year, and, last but not least, scallywags.

Find a Summer Romance

Is that love in air or is that just BBQ smoke? Regardless, a summer fling will make for a constructive summer. It's a possibility that because of the decreased amount of people, it will become even harder to hook up at Northwestern. So, you probably have to resort to townies. There are few things more tender than townie love so don’t get sprung. The best place to find a townie beau is at Barnes & Noble. I know this for a fact. It’s the perfect place to set up some sweet meet cutes. Just keep dropping books and wait for someone to pick it up at the same time. Works every time.

Explore Chicago

Yeah yeah yeah, I know this point has been beaten to death at this school, still, not many people go into Chicago. Evanston is no comparison to the city. You can have a totally fun time without leaving Evanston, but if you want to make this summer truly unforgettable, you gotta hit up Chicago.  I’m not even going to bother listing the things to do in Chicago because you already know how wonderful the city is. Kanye is a big fan of summertime Chi, as he explained in “Good Life.” What’s good enough for Kanye is good enough for you.
