In Shocking Result, #Plexit Supporters Pass Referendum to Become Independent Dining Hall

In a true surprise that is sure to send shockwaves through the Northwestern campus, Plex West voted to leave the dining hall consortium, a major change that has immediate and long lasting effects on the makeup of food at Northwestern.

The vote reflects a deep separation in the desires of different Northwestern students. Younger students, many of whom are the most active beneficiaries of the dining hall system, voted overwhelmingly to keep Plex in the consortium, while many older students, some of whom who have been off meal plans for years, were the main supporters of the Plexit.

The main public argument of Plexit supporters centered around the idea that an independent dining hall would allow for more of the dining hall cash flow would return to the pockets of Northwestern students instead of being distributed across the university. However, troubling nationalist leanings undeniably played a large part in the result. Suspicions over the growing multicultural offerings of dining halls, such as the growing popularity of Plexican, were a major driving factor of the Plexit ground campaign.

Repercussions are already being noted, with Plex East announcing the reconsideration of their own referendum to leave the Plex Union, and equivalency meal values being traded at record lows in the Plex C-Store. It may still be months before the full effects are known.

Now, eyes turn across the Lakefill, where a vote on whether to move campus leadership into the Donald P Jacobs Center or to create a new building on the Hill is looming in November.
